🌟 Are you ready to dive into the enchanting world of Astro Bot? As we eagerly anticipate the release of Astro Bot’s titular PS5 adventure on September 6, let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at how this delightful character evolved from a tiny prototype to a beloved PlayStation mascot.

Astro Bot

Birthing Baby Robots

The journey of Astro Bot began with a simple but innovative idea at Team Asobi. Initially, the team sought to experiment with the DualShock 4 controller in conjunction with the PS4 camera, leading to a prototype called Little AR Men. The characters in this demo were tiny robots, designed for interaction in a virtual living room.

Studio director Nicolas Doucet explains, “That was the starting point. At the time we didn’t have any art, so we made prototypes out of primitive shapes.” These early designs consisted of mere cylinders with eyes, which were later rebranded as AR Bots. To fit a sci-fi aesthetic within a tight five-month deadline, the artists infused them with an endearing quality, giving them big eyes and a toddler-like waddle.

From AR Bots to Astro Bot

As the concept advanced, the AR Bots transformed into a central figure—Astro Bot—particularly during the evolution of The Playroom into The Playroom VR. He needed to be more defined, leading to the creation of the mini-game, Robots Rescue. “We internally called him Captain Astro,” Doucet shares. The development team introduced a PlayStation blue livery, hovering abilities, and customizable hands. Astro Bot was conceptualized to feel tangible in the VR space, resembling a robotics product that players could engage with physically.

It wasn’t until the 2018 release of Astro Bot Rescue Mission that the name “Astro” was officially adopted, complete with enhanced animation and artistic input from teams behind titles like Gravity Rush and The Last Guardian.

A Cache of the Minutiae

Astro Bot is not just a cute character; his design encompasses a wealth of detail:

- Eyes: His iconic blue LED eyes aren’t just for show—they convey emotions and help interact with VIP Bots, enhancing gameplay.

- Jetpack: When hovering, Astro’s tiny wings deploy, providing a logical explanation for his gliding ability.

- Chrome Dome: His reflective head plating embodies the dazzling power of the PS5, mirroring surrounding environments as he journeys through various settings.

- Robo Voice: Astro’s charming, high-pitched voice was designed with careful consideration to mix English, Japanese, and universal sounds to resonate with a global audience.

Expanding Astro's World

Astro’s journey unlocks a vividly expanded universe, thanks to PS5’s capabilities. Doucet notes that the game introduces over 70 new wildlife species, like frogs and elephants, designed in line with the cute LED-eyed bot aesthetic. This consistency can also be seen in the power-ups and companions like Barkster the bulldog booster.

Steel Some Beloved PlayStation Characters

Astro Bot doesn’t just exist in isolation—his world is expanded by the introduction of VIP and Cameo Bots, which pay homage to fan-favorite PlayStation characters like Kratos and Aloy. Doucet explains the design challenge: “They had to be a cool sci-fi design but also have things like fabrics or furry boots.”

Compromises had to be made in designing these characters, ensuring their long-standing personality is honored while adapting them into the Astro Bot style. For instance, some characters don masks to bridge design elements when LED eyes don’t suit their original concept.
